The combination of tradition, craftsmanship and technology has ensured that the “magic” formula for UASHMAMA®(pronounced Wash Mama) paper arose. Made with a production technique similar to the one used when tanning leather. It is durable, sustainable and the material is 100% natural fibers from plantation grown trees.

It’s paper, it looks like leather, is washable and retains its shape. Suitable for many purposes. The possibilities with the UASHMAMA® products are endless and continue to inspire. It started with an idea. The first paper bag was a reality and since then the collection has expanded to include handbags, shoppers, braces and aprons. The products are available in various colors, sizes and finishes.

UASHMAMA is the Eco friendly answer, we are all looking to reduce, reuse and recycle for a sustainable and a conscious living. The UASHMAMA AGGO® paper is the base for the entire collection. AGGO® paper is made from cellulose fibers from plantation grown FSC certified wood. All products are sewn by hand in private Toscany homes.

Feels like leather – wash like fabric – made of paper

All UASHMAMA products are designed and made in Lucca, Toscany. The paper is made using a virgin fibre from cultivation and NOT through deforestation! The manufacturing process is similar to leather where each individual sheet of paper is stretched and tanned making it durable to withstand daily use and to be washed over and over again. In other words the products are a perfect example of sustainability and offers an unlimited number of applications

SUSTAINABILITY

From design concept to final product, every step of the manufacturing and production process is thoughtfully managed and considered. We strive to reduce our environmental impact throughout every stage.

Raw material

UASHMAMA certify our raw material processes, implement water-saving methods, and do not use chrome.

Recycled cotton

The straps UASHMAMA uses, like the shoulder straps of backpacks, are made of recycled cotton – 85% of which is derived from used T-shirts.

Organic cotton

We use organic cotton, woven in Tuscany with certified organic fibers, for our bag lining.

Local production

We’re proud to be Italian. We keep our manufacturing and production local, employing local craftsmen and artisans that excel at their respective trade from the surrounding Tuscan area only.

Waste material

Wherever possible, we take careful considerations to reduce waste. The materials we use to reinforce our bags, sacks, and backpacks are scraps of AGGO paper and organic cotton so that any waste is used.

Vegetable tanning

The leather we use is top quality, tanned in the Tuscan area, utilizing old principles and methods of ‘vegetable tanning’ in the total absence of chrome, using only tannins from the chestnut tree.

The Marconi Family (UASHMAMA)

Marco Marconi is the founder and creative soul of UASHMAMA and together with his wife the founder of Le Sorelle. The company also include their four daughters Chiara, Giulia, Gemma and Gaia. Marco has a past in the industry for womens footwear and leather goods. A work experience he has integrated in the UASHMAMA concept. The story behind the name ‘UASHMAMA’ is the desire to dedicate something to the mother in the family and lead the thoughts to a mother doing all the laundry for her children. In many ways UASHMAMA reflect the Italian family: modest and unique like the four sisters, elegant like the mother and very creative, innovative and functional like the father – the man behind the idea.
